Conservation Strategy
Funding Opportunity - Small Grants Program
The Monarch Butterfly Fund welcomes proposals from organizations or individuals for activities that support conservation of monarch butterflies or their habitat. Most of our funding will support activities focused on protecting the oyamel fir forests in which monarch butterflies overwinter in central Mexico, and will be awarded to Mexican organizations and individuals. Projects must address one of the strategic initiatives of MBF: forest conservation, habitat assessment and species monitoring, scientific research, public awareness and education, or sustainable development. Our Partners
We collaborate with a number of other non-profit organizations who are active in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and projects that forward our mission. We encourage the participation of and seek collaboration with others in the conservation of monarch butterflies.
Forest Conservation
Reforestation and forest restoration in the monarch's Mexican overwintering sites and surrounding areas are important for the well being of the local residents and for the monarch butterfly.
Habitat and Species Assessment and Monitoring
Habitat assessment and species monitoring are necessary to evaluate the overall health of the ecosystem.
Scientific Research
MBF supports scientific research and the exchange and distribution of scientific information that has direct relevance to conservation in the overwintering sites.
Public Awareness and Educational Activities
MBF strongly believes in engaging the public through education and outreach activities to encourage greater understanding, appreciation, and support of the challenge of monarch conservation.
Sustainable Development Projects
MBF provides support for sustainable development projects that support the livelihood of residents of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, including local non-profit organizations, artisan projects, and activities that increase tourism-related income.
